Day 20 Dalton HWY Deadhorse

We made it to Prudhoe Bay (Deadhorse). We drove straight through from Northpole Alaska, to Deadhorse in 18hrs, over 400 miles.
We got to the Arctic Circle.
We got to Coldfoot at about 3:30pm and went to the visitor center and filled up with diesel.

We decided to not stop in Coldfoot and just keep going. We heard about this 100 year old mining town called Wiseman and decided to go check it out.

The church is open 24/7 and still has services every Sunday at 11am. The other picture is of the post office which opened in 1909 and closed in 1956.
Then we headed 40 miles north. as we were driving we saw a moose
And some other good scenery.
Then we stopped for dinner in the middle of no where and Dad cooked big 1 inch thick pork chops, rice, and green beans. very yummy. The place we stopped at was really fun to go walk around.

As we were driving away this convoy of trucks (3) pushing this other truck with a 20ft wide, 232ft long 43,000lbs building down the road to Deadhorse.
We finally arrived in Deadhorse at 2:30am and just before that it was very sunny out and we had to drive facing the sun which wasn't very fun. Then the weather changed quickly and we went into a dark white fog and couldn't see the road very well.
"closing comment from Dad" A lot of you asked if it would be worth it going all this way and taking the time and possible danger of the road, and my answer to that is it is well worth it and every minute of the entire 18hrs. It was something I will never forget. I told the boys this was my one time but when they grow up maybe they will want to do it with their kids and/or friends. What makes it worth it is the beautiful scenery and sometimes out of no where is a rainbow.
We will not be able to post again til we get to Fairbanks or Denali, and again thanks for you support and prayers.

  1. WOW - beautiful scenery - and that one picture of the moose and the reflection - that is just simply awesome. I am certain that it will win a prize somewhere along the way. Or, I see a framed picture hanging somewhere. Wish I could see it with you!
